Chapter 26

The children and the teachers watched the coach depart in a puff of black smoke and almost before the smog of it had dissipated a very old bus came into view, it drew alongside, and it stopped in the very spot Super Mario’s coach had just inhabited. It was very old and out of place compared to the other modern coaches and buses. Super Mario’s coach looked a little decrepit, but this thing was positively archaic, it looked like a movie prop, but weirdly it had made barely a sound.

The door opened and a driver stepped out. Derek had expected to see a usual coach driver, burly, a little overweight from too much sitting down, too much eating, not enough exercise (much like himself), but he was surprised to see a man, neatly dressed and in a dark suit. He looked directly at Deirdre and picked up her bag. He had a blank face which was ‘unremarkably plain’ she thought.

Derek was thinking much the same as Deirdre was, and was just about to speak to him when he said, ‘This way Ma’am, Sir, children, best be on our way.’

Without waiting for a reply of any kind he walked off with her bag in his hand towards the rear of the old bus, he opened up a compartment, and started putting all the baggage in.

‘Here we go again,’ said Rich. ‘The next coach will probably be drawn by a horse.’

The driver gave Rich an even look which was completely lost on him.

‘Oh well,’ said Deirdre. ‘Everybody get on board, I can see the driver is eager to be off, as are we all.’ She climbed up and got into a seat just behind the driver’s seat. It was remarkably comfortable, and the inside felt much more spacious than it had appeared from the outside. The children all filed in and found places to sit, Derek sat next to Deirdre. The driver climbed into his seat, and closed the doors with a lever of some kind, there were no electronics on this bus.

Derek did a head count; everyone was accounted for. As he sat back in his seat two things struck him, firstly the head height was vast, he hadn’t needed to stoop at all as he walked up and down counting heads, the second thing was he realised every seat was occupied, not a single spare space, this bus had twenty-three seats on it and no more.

Everyone felt the movement as the bus took off, but it was completely silent and utterly smooth, belying its external appearance.

‘Is this thing electric?’ said Baz.

‘I don’t know mate,’ said Colin, ‘but it is..’

‘Odd?’ interjected Rich.

‘Yes, that is one way of putting it,’ he replied. ‘Don’t worry Dad,’ he thought. ‘I’m on the case, me and Baz and Rich, just like you and your mates, the Three Amigos, eh Dad.’ He smiled a nervous smile to Baz, and resolved to fill Rich in as soon as they got off this silent and eerie bus.
